Alocasia sanderiana 'Black Velvet'
Alocasia 'Black Velvet' (S)
Alocasia is a family of hybrids originating in South East Asia, commonly known as the 'Elephant Ear'. The 'Black Velvet' has very dark heart shaped leaves that look like velvet with striking contrasting veins. Also known as a Jewel Alocasia, it comes from the forests of Borneo and was brought to domestic life in the 1860s by English collectors. This plant is pretty hard to come by and is also slow growing, so you may want to get a larger one if you can find one!
CARE TIPS
The 'Black Velvet' Alocasia enjoys bright, humid conditions but requires less water than other types of Alocasia. Do not let it sit in standing water, allow it to dry before re-watering and don't mist the leaves. Also avoid the temptation to over fertilise as this is a slow grower and should only be transplanted once a year. Reduce water intake throughout colder seasons and expect your plant to lose its leaves below 7 degrees celsius as the plant hibernates.
