Alocasia wentii - 'New Guinea Shield' (S)
The Alocasia wentii, also known as 'Elephant Ear', has wonderfully large, flat dark-green leaves in an attractive oval shape with a neat tip. The wentii varietal has a distinctive purple-bronze underside to the leaf, providing a contrast to the rich deep green of the top side. Deeper colour contrasts emerge as the plant matures. As a native to Southeast Asia, Alocasia loves tropical climates so warm, humid indoor spaces will allow your Alocasia to really thrive and add a beautiful jungle look to your home.
Spots in your house where Alocasia can see the sky but not get direct sunlight are best. Make sure to rotate every so often so all of the foliage gets even light. Watering amounts and frequency is dependant on the time of year and levels of humidity/air moisture in your home. Start by watering on the same day of the week every week. Check up on the soil on these days by inserting your finger into the soil about half an inch and feel the moisture level. If it still feels wet, try again in a couple of days. If the soil feels dry, you will need to water more than once a week. Aim to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Alocasia is likely to hibernate during winter, and may lose leaves if it gets too cold. Fertilise during growth season.
Water on the same day each week. Check if the top inch of soil is dry, if yes you need to water more often. Keep the soil moist but not soggy.
