Zamioculcas zamiifolia 'Black Raven'
Black Raven ZZ
We all know the ZZ plant, but have you met its emo sibling?
Commonly known as the 'ZZ Plant', Zamioculcas zamiifolia is native to East Africa and is an incredibly hardy perennial. This new cultivar's leaves come in as a dark green and fade to an eye stopping black. It has a cool root-tuber system under the soil in which it stores water and nutrients. Because of this, it's super easy to maintain and will tolerate all sorts of neglect, including drought conditions, dry air, and low light. It is also very pest resistant. Of course, we recommend treating your ZZ with care and kindness so you can enjoy a happy, thriving plant which will reward you with spurts of new leaf shoots! Avoid overwatering, especially during the cooler months, and take caution as the ZZ plant is considered toxic if eaten by pets or humans. Overall, Zanzibar makes an excellent addition in homes and offices as a potted specimen, or it can be planted in a shady area of the garden.
The ZZ Plant is very easy to care for and a great starter for new plant owners. Simply make sure you do not overwater ... play it safe and if in doubt - do not water. The ZZ Plant stores water and nutrients in it's rhizomes (a tuber-like root system), so it will be able to tolerate drier soil better than overly wet soil. Also avoid direct sunlight to prevent damaging the leaves.
