Euphorbia trigona - African Milk Tree / Dragon Bones (M)
Native to Central Africa, this succulent tree thrives under full shade to filtered bright light. Growing vertically in fleshy triangular stems, the dense thorny silhouette is a sight to behold once matured! Small leaves emerge in neat columns on the outside points of the triangle, lined by little spikes, and you can expect a growth spurt leading into warmer months. As this succulent actually grows leaves, it is one of the very few to carry the title of a 'tree'. Enjoys warm temperatures, so avoid drafts and be prepared relocate during colder months. During warmer months, flowers of white and yellow may bloom, if you're lucky!
This desert and drought tolerant succulent will thrive under bright indirect light to partial shade. Direct sun may burn the plant. Best grown in well drained soil and kept moist. Water moderately once the top soil has dried up. This tree will communicate when overwatered. If it's tipping over or turning yellow, that is strong signal for you re-adjust your watering schedule. This tree survives better in dry soil than soggy. Promote healthy growth with fertiliser in warmer seasons. The white sap is irritable so ensure the use of gloves when handling the plant.
Water once topsoil is dry, keep soil well drained.
