Heart Leaf Philodendron - Cordatum (S)
The Heartleaf philodendron aka Sweetheart Plant is easy to grow and well known for its distinct foliage which gives it it's name. Heart-shaped, glossy leaves emerge as slightly bronze and quickly changed to light green. This Philo is an eager climber and the leaves will mature to 5-10 cm long and cover its long, slender stems that can grow to over a metre long when left unpinched. You can pinch back the stems at any time to help it branch out and become bushier or alternatively, you can let it grow long and lanky. Always pinch after a leaf node (the place where a leaf is attached to the stem). A new stem will grow from that node.
Best in moderate to bright light but will tolerate low light conditions. Small leaves or long spaces between leaves indicate insufficient light but avoid direct sunlight as it may scorch the plant. Keep the soil lightly moist over the warmer months and allow the surface of the soil to dry out between waterings in winter. Yellow leaves are also caused by overwatering. Maintain humidity by misting regularly. Provide liquid fertiliser during warmer months to encourage growth.
