Maranta Green 'Prayer Plant' (S)
Native to the Brazilian tropical forests, the Maranta thrives in warm humid climates. The foliage is in the form of enlarged oval shaped leaves, with the top side of the leaf coloured in two shades of green, and the other side in a contrasting colour. During the day, the leaves will be open and on full display until dusk, when the leaves gently fold up like prayer hands. The decorative, patterned leaves and its characteristic nyctinasty are what make Maranta leuconeura one of the most unique and distinctive plants to have in your home.
Although tolerates in low light conditions, bright and indirect sunlight is best suited for this tropical plant. Too much sun exposure and the leaves will yellow and lose its pigmentation. Prayer plants thrive best in warm, humid conditions with minimal air flow, moist soil, and enough fertiliser. During growing season, ensure that the soil remains damp but not sopping wet. In colder months, Maranta may retreat. You can reduce the watering, but maintain the humid environment with a frequent misting or positioning it alongside other plants to store moisture between themselves.
