Calathea insignis / lancifolia
Calathea insignis - Rattlesnake Calathea (S)
Calathea insignis or also referred to as Calathea lancifolia or the Rattlesnake calathea is an unusual plant with striking dark markings on its leaves. Part of the prayer plant family, you'll notice the leaves turning upwards as evening approaches. It can survive in lower light conditions making it an ideal desktop or bedroom plant.
Water lightly as when top soil is dry to keep the potting evenly moist, but avoid soggy soil. Mist regularly and wipe leaves with damp cloth and keep in warm conditions such as well lit kitchens and bathrooms. Will tolerate low light but best in medium or bright indirect light. Apply a rich slow release fertiliser every three months for vibrant healthy foliage and reduce water slightly in winter. Best with dechlorinated water. Watch for browning edges which can be caused by uneven watering, or over fertilisation.
